Texas Community Mourns Loss of Two Young Sisters After Historic Flooding

A heartbreaking discovery in Texas Hill Country has touched hearts across the nation. Two young sisters, Blair and Brooke Harber, ages 13 and 11, were found together after flash floods swept through the region during an early-morning storm last Friday.

The family had been vacationing in the Casa Bonita area of Hunt, a quiet gated community, when severe weather moved in overnight. According to family members, heavy rains began around 3:30 a.m., part of a widespread and historic flooding event that has caused significant damage across Texas.

Jennifer Harber, the girls’ aunt, shared on a GoFundMe page that their father, RJ Harber, was awakened by the sound of pounding rain and rising water. At the same time, a final message came from Brooke, the younger sister, who texted “I love you” to her dad and grandparents.

RJ and his wife, Annie, quickly attempted to reach their daughters, who were staying in a nearby cabin with their grandparents, Mike and Charlene Harber. The couple escaped their cabin by breaking a window and sought help from neighbors. Despite their efforts, the rushing water made it impossible to reach the second cabin in time. Rescuers later found RJ and Annie, along with several neighbors, and brought them to safety.

Search crews discovered the girls several hours later, downstream from where they were last seen. Their grandparents remain missing as search efforts continue.

Blair and Brooke were students at St. Rita’s Catholic School in Dallas, where their mother Annie serves as an instructional specialist. The family had taken a short summer trip and, like many others affected by the storm, could not have anticipated the scale of the disaster.

In statements shared by the family, Blair was remembered as a bright student with a kind and generous heart, while Brooke was described as someone who brought joy to everyone around her. Both girls were known for their strong faith and had brought their rosary beads with them on the trip.

The Harber family is now leaning on their faith and the support of loved ones as they process their loss and wait for news about Mike and Charlene.

As Texas continues recovery efforts and search operations in the wake of record-setting floods, the Harber family’s story has become a symbol of love, resilience, and the strength of community during times of unimaginable hardship.
