Jota, 28, and Silva, 26, were in a Lamborghini traveling at high speed when a tire reportedly exploded during an overtaking attempt. Emergency responders arrived quickly but could not save the brothers. The scene showed the car completely burned, with debris scattered across the road.
Jota, who played for Liverpool and the Portuguese national team, had recently undergone lung surgery and was advised not to fly—he chose to drive instead. Just ten days earlier, he had married his longtime partner, Rute Cardoso.
Fans across Portugal and Liverpool are mourning the sudden loss. The funeral will take place Saturday morning in Gondomar, Portugal.
