Mandatory Gender Testing Introduced: Gold Medalist Imane Khelif Suspended Amid Controversy

Imane Khelif, the Algerian boxer who claimed gold in the 66 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has been suspended from future women’s boxing events pending the results of a mandatory gender verification test.

This decision comes following a major announcement by World Boxing, which is rolling out a new policy aimed at ensuring fairness and safety in all men’s and women’s competitions.

🔍 New Gender Testing Policy: Part of a Global Push for Equality and Safety

The mandatory gender identification test is now a requirement for all athletes participating in World Boxing events. The policy aims to level the playing field and ensure the well-being of all competitors, including Khelif, who has been barred from the Eindhoven Boxing Cup and other global events until the test is passed.

🧬 Genetic Testing & Impact on Transgender Athletes

Under this new policy, athletes over 18 will be subject to a genetic test using PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) to detect the presence of the Y chromosome, a key indicator of biological sex.

The policy was developed in response to growing concerns about potential unfair advantages in gender-diverse competition settings.

Khelif, who previously expressed her dream of defending her title at Los Angeles 2028, may now face serious barriers to competing as a woman in future tournaments.
